How To Style A Bookshelf (like a pro)
Refreshing a room doesn’t have to mean buying all new things and moving furniture. I love doing simple updates like rearranging and improving the decor on my shelves to achieve a refreshed feel in my favorite spaces. When it comes to decorating bookshelves, it can be a little daunting to try and figure out what to put on each shelf so here are some simple tips to help you style a bookshelf, like a pro!
ADD HEIGHT
Adding height to a shelf can help draw your eyes up making the space feel taller and offer a nice range of height between collected decor pieces.
STAND & LAY BOOKS
It’s no secret I love vintage hardback books in beautiful colors. They not only add color, but also height and texture when used as decor. I suggest laying some down to elevate pieces of pottery and also stand books together like you would see in a library.
ADD TEXTURE
Add beautiful dimension to a bookshelf by incorporating textured items like vintage frames and stands of beads.
TRAILING PLANTS
Plants are always a great way to add depth and earthy element to your decor. I love using trailing plants as they help to draw your eye down to the next shelf.
FOLLOW TO RULE OF 3’S
A good rule of thumb when decorating a shelf is to follow the rule of 3’s which is grouping 3 items together on a shelf, which I say “lets make them friends.” Select 3 decor pieces with varying height and texture that compliment each other.
COLLECT POTTERY YOU LOVE
I love to collect organic shaped pottery and vessels I find at thrift stores and flea markets. Pottery in varying shapes and sizes are perfect pieces of decor for any bookshelf.
LIGHT IT UP
Incorporate a focal point to the space by adding a light element to the mix! I love this white salt lamp I added to my bookshelf as it also acts as a calming night light in the entryway.
BASKETS
Shelving is also perfect for additional storage which can be done tastefully with baskets. You can set 2 side-by-side on the bottom shelf for maximum storage.
