From Broken To Beautiful: Cracked China Plate DIY

When I first found the blue china plates at an estate sale I was so excited to use them and add them to my collection. One fell out and broke as soon as I got home and although it made me sad at the moment, I knew I could use it as material for something else!

Things that are broken aren’t always trash… sometimes you just need to look at it with a different perspective or through a new lens.

A few weeks ago I went to an estate sale that had these beautiful vases made with cracked china. Needless to say I fell in love and almost bought them. They had a couple of cracks and I knew I had the perfect cracked plate at home to make my own so I headed to the craft store and started to plan the DIY.

I also knew I needed a couple more plates to have different patterns so I went to the thrift store and found the rest of the materials I needed. First I focused on the chipped china plates and tea cup-less saucers to bring home and then I found the perfect inexpensive rolling pin (that will be used exclusively for crafts) and wooden dowels (to set a guide for the thickness of the clay).

The whole process really brought me back to my DIY roots and it felt like connecting body and mind. I love repurposing things that otherwise would be discarded and considered waste like the phonograph I made into a vanity and the front porch posts I turned into the legs for our kitchen island at the Texas cottage.

I hope this inspires you guys to look for the use in something that could be considered “broken” and turn it into something beautiful for your home.
